George Bessler, a member of Rotary International<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Seminole Lake, Florida, chapter, traveled to India to help assist with polio treatment. For one week in February, the retired fire chief worked in a health clinic and two hospitals located on the outskirts of New Delhi, and assisted a team of nurses. In the article, he recalls his trip abroad and says that he was touched that so many families made the long trek from rural regions to the city to receive the polio vaccine. While in India, he also met with Habitat for Humanity, which is planning to educate one million people about proper hygiene and build 1,000 mobile toilets to help reduce the spread of polio, as many residents living in isolated areas don\u2019t have access to proper facilities.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s one thing to get involved with donations, but this kind of trip put the whole thing in perspective,\u201d Bessler said. \u201cNot only do you want to donate your money, but you also want to understand where your money is going.\u201d<\/p>\n
