In February, the WHO declared Zika an international emergency and the UN agency believes that it could lead to birth defects. However, surveillance systems in place at the majority of WHO member states currently monitor for acute flaccid paralysis (AFP)<\/a><\/strong> as part of its global polio eradication program. The program involves analyzing stool samples of children 14 years old and younger in a lab to confirm cases of AFP. The WHO believes that it can create a similar program for early polio detection using similar framework.<\/p>\n
