Healthcare workers have been experiencing resistance from some locals when trying to administer the polio vaccine in Ludhiana, a district in India, and officials claim that affluent people have proven to be the biggest culprits. Over the past few weeks, there’s been a large push to immunize children with the polio vaccine, however some workers are finding it difficult to do their job when parents are refusing to allow their children to receive the treatment.
“The problem mostly comes from posh localities,” says Kamaljeet Kaur, one of the healthcare workers. “People do not open their doors. We keep standing in the sun but they are least bothered. When we tell them we have come to administer polio drops, they ask numerous questions and ask us to show our ID card. And finally after so much interrogation they say they have already administered the drops to their kids from his/her doctor. It is very difficult to convince them.”
