Role of Media Termed Crucial in Fighting Polio

During a media roundtable held earlier this week in Quetta, a provincial capital in Pakistan, a coordinator with the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) emphasized the import role that the media plays in the battle for polio eradication. Dr. Saifur Rehman talked to senior reporters about their role in creating a positive national narrative about defeating the disease, as Pakistan is one of the only countries left in the world where polio is still alive. He continued by saying that anti-vaccination campaigns were occurring in areas where there’s been a push by the medical community to inoculate children, and that the media can help educate the public in the importance of polio vaccination. He also asked the media outlets to dedicate more airtime to social and health issues that relate to the illness.
