Fighting the Virus: ‘Presence of Polio Is Embarrassing for Pakistan’

pakistan-895319_1920Fayaz Jatoi, the newly appointed coordinator of the provincial Emergency Operation Center (EOC) for polio, posed this question during an orientation session attended by fellow deputy commissioners in Karachi on Monday. The objective of the session was to share basic facts on polio eradication; clarify roles of district polio control rooms; and identify ways to strengthen oversight, coordination, and communication. Later in the discussion, he asked his fellow commissioners what obstacles lay ahead for finally eradicating polio, which they replied challenges in team formation, quality training, and lack of vaccine dispensaries in remote areas of the country. Currently, Pakistan is one of two countries (the other being Afghanistan) where polio remains endemic. “We should make significant efforts to improve the method to gain results,” Jatoi said.
